Match Report: New Milton CC 2nd XI vs Burley CC 2nd XI
Hampshire Cricket League Division 5A – 20 June 2026, Fernhill Sports Ground
A commanding all-round performance saw New Milton 2nd XI cruise to a convincing victory over Burley 2nd XI, built around a magnificent century from captain Joe Wooster and a disciplined bowling display that dismantled the visitors—capped off by a sharp piece of fielding to seal the contest.
Wooster Leads From the Front
After losing the toss and being asked to bat, New Milton were briefly tested early, slipping to 59–3. However, captain Joe Wooster delivered a masterclass, finishing unbeaten on 152 from 131 balls, peppering the boundary with 22 fours and a six.
He was well supported by Peter Johnson, who struck a composed 64 (72 balls), the pair sharing a crucial stand that swung momentum decisively back to the hosts.
With contributions down the order and 25 extras aiding the total, New Milton posted an imposing 267–4 from 40 overs.
Burley Struggle Under Pressure
Chasing 268, Burley’s innings never found rhythm. Early breakthroughs reduced them to 12–2, and despite resistance from James Bockett (35) and Dan Mundy (22), wickets fell at regular intervals.
The visitors’ middle order faltered badly under pressure as they slipped from 51–5 to 71–8, leaving the result beyond doubt.
Ruthless Bowling and a Sharp Finish
New Milton’s bowlers dominated throughout:
Luke Ruane produced a superb spell of 3–3 from 5 overs, including three maidens
George Beck was equally effective with 3–12
Harry Beck (2–19) and Elliott Bennett (1–13) kept things tight
As Burley edged towards an inevitable conclusion, the match was fittingly sealed by a moment of quality in the field. Jamie Gawler, alert and composed, gathered and fired in a direct throw to knock over the stumps, running out the final batter and bringing the innings—and the game—to a close in emphatic fashion.
Burley were dismissed for 96 in 32.4 overs, handing New Milton a comprehensive 171-run victory.
