New Milton CC pulled off a dramatic one-wicket victory over Liphook & Ripsley at Ripsley Park in a thrilling Southern Premier Cricket League Division 2 encounter that went down to the penultimate ball of the match.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Liphook & Ripsley posted a competitive 246 all out from 49.3 overs, thanks largely to impressive innings from George Neave (85) and Joe Farndale (61).

Liphook made a shaky start when Henry Amis departed for a duck with the score on 8, but Farndale responded positively, striking 61 from 71 deliveries, including eight fours and two sixes. He shared valuable partnerships with Ryan Covey and Ash-Lee Harvey, helping the hosts reach 100 in the 24th over.

The foundation of the innings, however, was built by captain George Neave, who produced a classy 85 from 80 balls, peppering the boundary with 12 fours and two sixes. Neave combined with George Zawoda (34) in a stand worth 76 runs for the fifth wicket to push Liphook into a strong position at 172-5.

Despite Neave's efforts, New Milton fought back effectively in the closing stages. Alfie Oxford proved the match-turning figure with the ball, claiming an excellent 5-46 from 8.3 overs, while Lee Beck (2-35) provided crucial support. Liphook lost their final six wickets for 74 runs to be dismissed for 246.

Chasing 247, New Milton's reply began disastrously. They slumped to 1-2, with Ryan Covey removing James Adams and Dylan Grimes bowling Josh Parsons. Even after Teddy Golding's enterprising 12, the visitors were wobbling at 34-3.

A counter-attacking 30 from Ollie Shrubsole and 24 from wicketkeeper Ed Wooster steadied the innings, but Liphook maintained control and reduced New Milton to 121-6 when Cam Golding fell lbw.

The match then swung dramatically through the efforts of captain Ed Bartlett, who anchored the chase superbly. Bartlett compiled a magnificent 79 from 106 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes while holding the innings together as wickets fell around him.

His crucial partnership with Ed Denham added 65 runs for the seventh wicket and dragged New Milton back into contention. Even when Bartlett departed with 30 runs still required, the visitors continued to battle.

Lee Beck then produced a vital late cameo, smashing 31 from 23 balls, including two sixes, to leave New Milton within touching distance. Although he became the ninth wicket to fall with the score on 243, Sam Moran kept his nerve, remaining unbeaten on 9 as New Milton scrambled the winning runs with just one ball remaining.

For Liphook, Ryan Covey (2-47), George Neave (2-61) and Ash-Lee Harvey (2-52) shared the wickets, but they were unable to land the decisive blow in the closing overs.
